At the West end of Abbey Street is the Holy Trinity Church, known as the Black Abbey. It was founded outside the walls of the ancient city for the Dominican Order (who wear black-over garments- hence the name) in the 13th century. 8 friars died in one day during the Black Death of 1349. The Abbey survived only to be suppressed in 1541. Today the Abbey consists of a 13th century nave, 14th century transept and 15th century windows and tower. It is a beautiful church with some fine stain glass windows.
