Built between 1202 and 1285 in the style known as Early Gothic, the Cathedral takes its name from the founder of the first monastic settlement in the area. Richly endowed with many stained glass windows, its interior glows with light and peace. The continental carvings on the choir stalls and the Sanctuary floor paved with different coloured marble from the four provinces in Ireland are a prominent feature. Stone monuments to carpenters and the first translator of the Bible into Irish, Bishop Nicholas Walsh and the original Baptismal Font are some of the features. Beside the cathedral stands a Round Tower which may have once been used as a watchtower. Weather permitting the tower can be climbed for an unsurpassed vantage point of the city and the surrounding countryside.
