
The structure was originally a bastion built to protest the docks from the sea. Originally longer, with four arches instead of two, and with battlements at the top, it was an imposing fortress. The sea came right up to the outer wall. The “Spanish” name comes from the proximity of a square that in the 18th century was called the Spanish Parade, hearkening back to more peaceful times when Galway had extensive trading contacts with Spain.
