Kyteler's Inn

Kieran's Street, Kilkenny City

Now a thriving city centre pub & restaurant, Kyteler’s Inn became famous as the home and Inn of Dame Alice Kyteler. She took over the family business of money lending and managed to outlive her four husbands in increasingly suspicious circumstances, was in true Salem-style accused of witchcraft by the local bishop. This event which occurred in 1324 remains Ireland’s only recorded accusation of witchcraft. Sentenced to be burned at the stake, she managed to make her escape, leaving her trusty maid Petronella to take the heat instead. Her son bartered for his life by agreeing to pay for the repairs to the roof of the then New Cathedral of St. Canice’s as an act of penance. He re-roofed the church in heavy lead and some years later the weight took its toll causing that section of the Cathedral to collapse.

Our Take

Kyteler's Inn- what a great name. And what a great pub. If you are not afraid of ghosts that is! (if you are Carpe Diem across the road is a great pub too!)
