
Clare Island, with its rugged, mountainous sea cliffs, storied past, and miles of stunning beaches, is one of our favorite walking destinations. This secluded island lies off the coast of Clew Bay, Co. Mayo and caters for the laid-back rambler and the experienced walker. Clare Island is synonymous with Grace O'Malley, the formidable Pirate Queen who ruled these lands during the 16th century.
While Clare Island is also the largest of Clew Bay’s many islands, its compact size, at just 8km by 5km, makes it easy to explore by foot. Clare’s dominant feature of is a rugged ridge line, runs east to west, that reaches a height of 465 metres at the mountain of Knockmore or Croaghmore.
Ferry service to Clare Island operating daily from Roonagh Quay will get you there in approx. 20 minutes.
