Barna

Barna, Co. Galway

Barna is a small village on the coast road from Galway to Connemara, 5 miles west of Galway city, on the main Galway to Carraroe Road . The name Barna in Irish is Bearna (a Gap or Mountain Gap). On entering the village from the Galway side, Barna Woods lie to the right and the left hand turn takes the traveller to the sheltered sandy beach at Silver Strand, a nice walk or cycle from Galway City . With the recent surge in development there is probably little need to stop in the town, unless in search of excellent seafood at Donnellys of the Pier.

Our Take

Barna may no longer be an ideal place to base yourself to explore Connemara, having fast become a suburb of Galway City, but it is only a short distance from Galway and has good beaches that can be easily driven or cycled to from Galway City.
